Time to check your kids back to school list: new books, uniform, gym kit, pencil case, bad haircut, healthy lunch, bulletproof backpack. Huh?

A couple of Boston fathers have decided that you can’t be too careful about going to school these days in the US so have created a couple of bulletproof backpacks. The MyChild backpack will stop most bullets, including 9mm hollow points, the makers claim.

It sounds mad but they say that since 1999 there have been 328 school shootings, leaving 229 dead and 422 injured.

The idea that all gamers are pimply, introverted, people-hating, smelly geeks harbouring fantasies of going to school armed, has been challenged today by the latest research from Nottingham Trent University.

The research claims that three quarters of online role-playing gamers – World of Warcraft, EverQuest, Guild Wars etc. – make good friends with the other dwarves and elves and some - brace yourselves – even hook up in the real world.

The report, Social Interactions in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Gamers, showed that one-in-three found themselves attracted to other players while 40 per cent felt more comfortable opening up to online buddies than real-life friends.

Professor Mark Griffiths, from Nottingham Trent University’s School of Social Sciences, said: “This study has revealed many aspects of MMORPGs that were not known before. Previous research has suggested that gamers are socially inactive, but MMORPGs are actually extremely social games, with high percentages of gamers making life-long friends and even partners.”

The idea of World of Warcraft addicts breeding is a disturbing thought. As a recovering Warcrack addict, I should know.-Martin Lynch

Nokia Will Replace 46 Million Batteries – Not A Recall Though August 17, 2007

nokia bl-5c battery.jpg When is a product recall not a product recall? The answer seems to lie with Nokia, which has offered to ‘voluntarily’ swap up to 46 million defective BL-5C mobile phone batteries.

It’s not a recall though since it’s leaving it up to customers whether or not they want to swap the dodgy battery or, run the risk [albeit small] that it will overheat and melt while charging. So far there have been around 100 reported cases of overheating.

There are around 300 million BL-5C batteries in use but only those made by Matsushita between Dec 05 and Jan 06 are on the black list. That would be 46 million then – small cheese to Nokia which has a billion handsets out there.

If you are worried about which one you have, go here and enter your battery’s 26-digit code. If it’s a hot one, Nokia will send out a free, less incendiary, replacement. -Martin Lynch
