Fatman, makers of the great iTube valve amps and iPod docks, has really pushed the boat out on this one, with the iTube Mothership. Trekkies will be familiar with the terminology for this wallet-crunching, £5,000 audio beast which features things like the iTube Controlroom and Engineroom.

The system comprises the Controlroom pre-amplifier [with three line inputs and one phono input] and two Engineroom Mono Block amplifiers, each delivering 200Watts of audio. The pre-amp comes with 6 premium amps and the amps sport 18 apiece.

Just make sure you don’t pump any compressed MP3 crap through it and you might just get your £5,000-worth. If your budget only stretches to £500, you might want to audition the valve-based Shanling MC-30 instead.-Martin Lynch
