On the back of the Church Vs. Sony saga and Manhunt 2 bans, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has decided to look into new rules on violence and sexual content in videogames.

He may have been nudged towards this potential quagmire by the launch of the Conservative’s own report on how to tackle crime, part of which includes cracking down on game violence. In a speech this week, Brown said:

“Parents are concerned about whether children are too exposed to harmful violence and sexual imagery in video computer games and on the Internet. So, as we launch the court consultation on our children's plan we will be looking at all the evidence on the effects of this material, whether we need new rules for the advertising and sale of these products to children and young people.”

Labour will be running “Citizens' Juries” around the country from this week, to allow members of the public to air their views. The first ones will look at child safety and include gaming. Don't expect any quick decisions though.-Martin Lynch
