Yamaha YSP-30D Sound Projector.jpg

As the pioneer of one-speaker surround with the cool YSP-series of speakers, Yamaha has overhauled its offerings now that AV heavyweights, Denon and Philips, have entered the arena. Audio specialist, Polk Audio, also recently entered this market with its first pseudo-surround product, the 51in SurroundBar50 for £600.

Yamaha is set to introduce three new models, the entry level Yamaha YSP-500, YSP-30D and YSP-40D. What makes the 30D and 40D really stand-out though is the addition of a DAB radio and iPod support. The surround sound is generated from lots of little speakers firing sound in different directions under the control of Yamaha’s Intellibeam Automated System Calibration – which adjusts the sound to suit your room.

There’s a Night Listening Mode for watching movies when the rugrats are snoring and a very handy TV Equal Volume Mode which ensures that annoying ads – which are always louder than your programme – come out at the same volume level. Nice.

Prices for the YSP-500, YSP-30D and YSP-40D are £500, £800 and £1,200 respectively. -Martin Lynch

PSP Lite.jpg
The new and improved PSP Slim & Lite has managed to sell 17,000 units in the UK in its first week. According to Sony the little belter has boosted sales four-fold over the previous week – which wouldn’t be too hard since they virtually dropped off a cliff in the run up to the arrival of the new model. A Sony spokesperson said:

“Of course we expected the previous weeks to be low as we moved the old stock through the channel in preparation for the Slim & Lite sku coming into retail, but now we are back on track and preparing for the launch of new products such as Go! Explore and Go Messenger.”

Of course, UK sales are peanuts compared to sales in tech-mad Japan, where the new PSP managed to sell over 95,000 units last week.-Martin Lynch

Digital music store Virgin Digital is closing down at the end of next month, after just two years in business. The closure might have been influenced by Richard Branson’s sell-off of its High St. Virgin Megastores last week but no one is saying.

What is known is that despite having one of the bigger music catalogues for download – around 2.5 million tracks – and being competitive on price with other digital music download services, like iTunes, the company will cease trading from October 19th. This is the message that now greets music shoppers on the Web site:

"Dear customer, we regret to announce that the Virgin Digital service is due to close. We will be taking no new customers from today, Friday 21st September. On Friday the 28th September we will cease selling tracks and access will be for current Club users only. On Friday the 19th October the site will close for all customers. If you have purchased tracks from the service then we recommend that you back up your music files – Information about backing up and re-downloading your tracks.

"If you are a current Club member you will be able to continue using the service until the date that your next payment is due, after which the service will no longer be accessible to you. To all our customers we would like to say thank you and offer our apologies for any inconvenience this might cause. We are happy to be able to offer you a 1-month free subscription to the Virgin Media digital streaming jukebox and this link will be available from next week."
