At this stage it’s not that much of a surprise but Halo 3 managed to notch up $170m (£84m) in sales in its first 24-hours of invasion of the US. The Microsoft figures show that the game even surpassed the opening day tally of the last Web-head movie, Spiderman 3.
Compared to Halo 2, which sold $125 million in 24 hours back in 2004, the Halo 3 sales are good but there’s a feeling that they should, and could, have been higher. After all, aren’t there a lot more Xbox consoles out there now?
In the first 24-hours, 1.4 million Halo 3 gamers hit Xbox LIVE for some multiplayer fragging, which is a healthy number indeed.
Microsoft is banking on Halo 3 being its number one cash cow, driving more Xbox 360 sales and it’s praying, that it will finally help its gaming division turn a profit for the first time in six years. No pressure, Master Chief, no pressure.

Im not surprised by the buy up rate, but i have to say its actually a pretty weak game, i mean after playing COD 4 beta, Halo feels like your shooting a water pistol
How are there a lot more Xbox consoles out there for Halo 3 than there were for Halo 2?
When Halo 2 was released, there were more than 9 million Xbox consoles sold in the US alone.
When Halo 3 was released, there were barely 9 million Xbox 360's sold worldwide.
The available market for Halo 2 was much greater than the Halo 3 market, and yet Halo 3 managed to bring in almost 50% more revenue.
How, exactly, could sales have been higher?
halo 3 is the best game i have ever played and Hacklerf is stupid for thinking call of duty 4 is goin to be better then this this is as good as it gets. and im gathering that since u think that wack stuff is better than halo3 that u must be at ,least 50 years old so u have fun jerkin ur chain in COD 4 and ill b owning people in halo3
