Sony Planning Cut-Price 40GB PS3? October 4, 2007

The wires are humming this week with rumours that Sony is planning to introduce a new 40GB PS3 model with a wallet-friendly price of $399 in the US and, so far, a reputed €399 in Europe.
That makes it around £275 which is a lot cheaper than the £399 tag for the 60GB version right now. The new version, according to some leaked Best Buy documents, is also supposed to ship with Spiderman 3 bundled.
That said, it seems almost to good to be true – at least on the price point – but what is for certain is that Sony is planning what it calls a ‘Big Bang’ announcement on October 12. With cut-price Xbox 360s and HD-ready Elite versions and Halo 3 selling up a storm, it could be that Sony – in the run up to the all-important holiday season - will finally be forced to do what everyone has said it should do from Day 1: cut the damn price.
All speculation though at this stage, but it’s good to dream, and with just 8 days to go we'll know soon enough.-Martin Lynch

Apparently the 10th Oct will see a price cut to €300 in Italy.
If it goes to If it goes to
If it goes to less than £300 then I'll buy one. Simple as that. I think Sony will find it's a breaking point price for many people. It's the price the PS2 was at launch.
I heard that they were dropping some USB ports or something as well. Not sure, if this is true, will have to wait for more information....
Sony complain that the prices of the Blu Ray drives are boosting the costs of the PS3.
So take the things out. They're not even used properly. Who wants one yet?
Drop to 40Gb, drop the Blu Ray and sell it for £200......
Yeah, only 2 USB ports, no memory card slot and most importantly... absolutly NO backwards compatability.
Sony have started a rush for the PS3, unfortunately it's for the old model, not this new watered down crap!
but to be fair if you dont want/have ps2 games why pay for it? i have a 360 and dont even use half the 20gb drive. and why would you need 4 usb ports? i assume 1 for wireless net connection - personally id only use wireless controllers. its a clever move sony really did need to make, id consider a ps3 now if a killer game came out and was bundled with it. in fact ill see what deals are about at xmas, and i never thought id say id buy a ps3
Haha! Exactly agree with the ??? above me! I was never even considering one, Infact i've never had a playstation but this seems too good to be true! I'll look around christmas time.
@ Revo.
Blu Ray is the single most innovative thing on the PS3 and a huge selling point. I wouldn’t like to see them get rid of it and I doubt they will.
