That’s the verdict from the 2007 T3 Gadget Awards where the iPod was elevated to being the greatest gadget of all time. It’s a bold claim and, not withstanding the iPod’s massive commercial success, it’s one that’s bound to generate the odd spot of verbal jousting and maybe even a bout of fisticuffs. Apple scooped six awards in all.

Personally, I think the iPod deserves to be in the Top 5, but doesn’t trump the Sony Walkman for me. Probably an age thing. The runners up in the category of the best gadget of all time were Sky+, the PS2, Nintendo Gameboy and the humble Walkman.

Unsurprisingly, the iPhone scooped the award for the most anticipated product launch of 2008. The Xbox 360 romped home as the gaming gadget of the 2007, thanks to the addition the external HD DVD drive, new HDD version, HDMI and yummy price cuts.

So, iPod the greatest ever? Discuss.-Martin Lynch

The praise the iPod receives is not justified for several reasons. a) It is iTunes that makes the iPod so usable and that is why it sold and continues to sell. Until iTunes, no company had mastered the art of making the sale and syncronisation of music with a portable device both easy and viable as a business proposition. b) I am a human factors designer and navigating the non-Touch iPods is very fiddly and why I will never buy one. Why no separate volume control? c) For £100 I have just purchased a Sony Ericsson K800i mobile phone that is quicker to navigate and far more versatile than any iPod. It has an outstanding FM Radio with RDS, a video player, a calendar and address book that both sync perfectly with my MacBook over Bluetooth, some excellent 2 & 3D games, it has a fantastic autofocus camera, can act as a full remote control for any of my devices using Bluetooth or Infrared. Oh, and with a 2gig memory card for £12 from Amazon, it is also a great music player that I can listen to using wired or Bluetooth wireless headphones sourcing my music from anywhere and simply dragging my files onto the phone that also doubles as a USB drive. Phew!

i didnt noticed the ipod in the picture, jst some nice chebs

iPod, best gadget!?

Well that's a triumph for aggresive marketing isn't it, cos no-one had made some sort of portable electronic music player before Steve Jobs dreamed this little nugget up eh!

Disgusting and shouldn't be allowed, it's not even a great MP3 player, typical Mac. All aesthetics.

@Wonderkid

That Sony phone sounds cool.

Have to agree with the general consensus here that all mp3 players are inferior to ipods and that all mp3 players should, hereafter, be known as ipods because, as any i-prat can tell you, Apple invented them.

Seriously, I agree that Walkmans were definitely the best gadget of their day, but maybe not of all time. Perhaps someone out there remembers the Stereobelt from 1972? I certainly don't, but it looks like this was the grand-daddy of portable entertainment, unless you count Playboy.

Got to say that I loved Sony stuff to bits back in the day but, in my eyes, Archos have been number one for several years now for combining quality, price and features.
