The iPhone might be the crème de la crème of portable bling but it cuts no ice at 50,000 feet with those catty trolley dollies. I mean hostesses, no stewardesses. Damn it, flight attendants.

While flying to Hawaii, the gentleman in question – Casey – was watching a movie on his iPhone when an attendant told him that mobile phones are not allowed to be used on the plane. He explained that it was in ‘Airplane Mode’, which means all of the wireless facilities are disabled.

The attendant [probably smiling tightly now] repeated the request, citing FAA regulations. Picture some verbal tennis here. Anyway, there harsh words ensued and Casey found himself explaining his actions to Hawaiian cops on the ground.

The moral of this story is never, ever argue with plastic-smile flight attendants OR don’t let them see you watching Jennifer Love Hewitt in the dismal “I Know What You Did Last Summer’. I’m not sure what the bigger crime is here.-Martin Lynch

I’m all up for a good cause that involves gadgets, since not only do people in need get something but I have the perfect excuse ready when I’m grilled about buying another toy I don’t really need.

In the US, Microsoft has teamed up with Warriors In Pink to create a customized Zune designed to raise money for breast cancer awareness and support. Unlike other gadgets that give a weenie portion of the money to charity, 100% of what punters pay goes to the Susan G. Koman For the Cure foundation, the world’s largest network of breast cancer survivors and activists.

Ford and Microsoft are footing the bill for the Limited Edition Zunes. Strange though how it’s an old Zune, not one of the superior Zune 2 devices launched recently. That said, a free firmware update is set to give old Zune users many of the features of the new ones. And anyway, a good cause is a good cause.

There’s little chance of this coming to the UK but you can order online here.-Martin Lynch
