Samsung has taken the wraps off an anorexic 40in LCD TV with a 1cm thin waistline at this week’s FPD International show Japan.

Just weeks after Sony kicked launched its first skinny OLED-based TV – just 3mm thin - Samsung is out to prove that existing LCD technology can be placed on an extreme diet too. This 10mm panel uses an LED backlight to provide what Samsung claims is 92% of the NTSC standard for colour saturation - almost as good as a CRT TV – but with a low power consumption of under 90W.

Unlike the Sony OLED panel, which is restricted to just 11in and is not HD-ready, Samsung’s super model is a HDTV, capable of displaying Full HD (1080p) video. When we will actually see them in shops is anyone's guess.

I love Steampunk gadgets and Steampunk PCs, and this has to be one of the most outrageous ones I’ve seen. As brave new world modifications go this PC from Poland is a testament to what one man and his welding torch can achieve.

Like the super Steampunk Laptop, this brass and wood masterpiece also works just fine too.

According to the forum [in Polish], many of the dials on the front actually have a purpose while you really have to appreciate the visible, backlit clockwork fan mechanism on one side of the machine – jump for the photo. Just add this Steampunk Mouse and it’s perfect.

More photos after the jump and video of the Steampunk fan in action.-Martin Lynch

Ah, Christmas, season of goodwill and cut-throat commercialism. In the high-def war, the HD DVD camp has been taking a kicking in the publicity stakes [and sales, apparently] from its Blu-ray rival.

hd dvd offer.jpg

As a result, Microsoft has extended its US offer of free HD DVD movies to the UK. That’s right, if you buy the HD DVD player for the Xbox 360 between now and the end of January 2008 you will get five free HD DVD movies. Just buy your HD DVD add-on for the 360, then pop over to this page on the Microsoft site and enter in your details along with the barcode from the player and your movies will be winging their way over within 28 days.

The downside is that you only get to choose from the following:

Serenity
The Chronicles of Riddick
Hulk
Children of Men
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
Troy
Full Metal Jacket
Corpse Bride
The Prestige
Swordfish
Black Rain
Dreamgirls
Word Trade Center

To be fair there are a few keepers in there but, the rest should be chosen for eye-candy value only. The offer is also extended to anyone that bought a HD DVD after Oct 1st [as long as you have the receipt] but early adopters of the HD DVD add-on are, sadly, left sucking eggs. -Martin Lynch

I was very impressed with the Panasonic PT-AE900U HD 720p projector last year – still am - and now the company has added two more to its LCD-based HD projector line-up.

The new PT-AE2000E is a full HD projector with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and price tag of just under the £2,000 mark. It looks all-business and comes with a bright 1,500 Lumens brightness rating and a claimed contrast ratio of 16,000:1. Sporting numerous enhancements over its predecessor, the identical looking PT-AE1000E, from new lens technology to better colour reproduction, the PT-AE2000E also has some interesting user features.

Most notable is a split-screen mode where you can tweak the image in one half of the screen while comparing it to the same ‘baseline’ image in the other half. It comes with a generous three HDMI inputs and don't forget, its £1,500 cheaper than the old one.

There’s also the new 720p PT-AX200E which boasts a special ‘Game Mode’ as one of its key selling points. The Game mode promises much faster game refresh modes than normal on many projectors which should make for smoother fragging.

It quotes 2,000 Lumens of brightness, 6,000:1 contrast ratio and sports a pair of HDMI slots. It costs £1,100.-Martin Lynch
