The Post Office is joining the broadband arena and plans to drag the nation’s elderly with it. And why not? Others in the broadband arena offer slightly lower prices to get ahead but the Post Office has come up with the novel idea of offering a broadband service that will appeal to the over 50s – which make up 25% of the UK’s online population.

The “easy-to-use-service”, provided by BT, can also be paid for in cash at 14,000 Post Office outlets. However, the elderly will not exactly be getting a bargain. In fact, the Post Office offering looks a mite cynical, a cashing-in on its massive elderly clientèle.

For instance, the entry level package costs a non-competitive £16 per month – not including your line rental. Prices rise to £21 for the Broadband Extra package.

OK, they are getting a claimed 8Mbits/sec service with a 5GB download limit but £16 is still above the odds.-Martin Lynch

In the US today, Sony is celebrating the seventh birthday of the brilliant PS2 console.

The company was also quick to re-commit to the ageing console’s 10-year lifecycle, saying there’s still plenty of life in the old dog yet, not least of which is 160 games due out between now and March next year.

Since its launch on October 26, 2000, the PS2 has racked up sales of over 120 million units and over 1 billion software titles have been sold.

For those who think the high-def PS3 and Xbox 360 rule this these days, think again: another 10 million PS2s will sell in the next five months alone. So, out of all the games launched, which ones have been the biggest sellers?

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (13 million)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (12 million)
Grand Theft Auto III (11 million)
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 million)
Gran Turismo 4 (8.79 million)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)
Kingdom Hearts (5.6 million)
Final Fantasy X (5 million)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (3.7 million)
Final Fantasy XII (3.68 million)

I was quite surprised at this list, I guess I never would have placed the Gran Turismo titles that high up. Still, those are the facts.-Martin Lynch
