In the US today, Sony is celebrating the seventh birthday of the brilliant PS2 console.
The company was also quick to re-commit to the ageing console’s 10-year lifecycle, saying there’s still plenty of life in the old dog yet, not least of which is 160 games due out between now and March next year.
Since its launch on October 26, 2000, the PS2 has racked up sales of over 120 million units and over 1 billion software titles have been sold.
For those who think the high-def PS3 and Xbox 360 rule this these days, think again: another 10 million PS2s will sell in the next five months alone. So, out of all the games launched, which ones have been the biggest sellers?
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (13 million)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (12 million)
Grand Theft Auto III (11 million)
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 million)
Gran Turismo 4 (8.79 million)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)
Kingdom Hearts (5.6 million)
Final Fantasy X (5 million)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (3.7 million)
Final Fantasy XII (3.68 million)
I was quite surprised at this list, I guess I never would have placed the Gran Turismo titles that high up. Still, those are the facts.-Martin Lynch

Am I the only one concerned that a series of video games that glorify and/or make it 'fun' to take on the role of a bad guy are so popular with people too young to know the difference? And is there a connection between these games and the significant increase in 'street level' violent crime in the UK, one of the regions where Grand Theft Auto is so popular?
shut up
you are the only one
shut up
yes you are the only one
Wonderkid(iot),
Oh I agree wholeheartedly with your totally reactionist and statistically unproven statement. I think we should outlaw violent video games today...immediately. And then when we wake up tomorrow, the world will be a peaceful place with UK youth planting trees, reading books and staying in school. That's all it will take is to just outlaw video games. I mean, after all, outlawing guns meant that no one in the UK got shot ever again, right?
Moron.
Violent video games do NOT create violent kids. Violent kids gravitate to violent video games. But so did peaceful law abiding kids too. Don't take away things from good law abiding decent people because a few cannot behave themselves. How many people die in car accidents caused by other drivers? Why not outlaw autos? Your logic is flawed. Street level crime is caused for a variety of reasons (the least of which can be attributed to video games). This type of crime has existed long before video games even existed, so how can you explain that? I recommend jailing every parent whose children commit crimes. The parents serve the sentence along with the juvenile.
and by the way, people who think violent video games cause violent kids are wrong, games should not be banned, becuz no child has ever became a maniac over games, and even if they did, the game shouldnt be banned the shop that sells them to kids should be, the game is intended for adults, not for kids so it is not the game developer's falt. also, ive been playing grand theft auto since i was 8 years old, im 13, and i am not a killer, car jacking criminal.
you are all wrong the reason grand theift auto is up so high in sales is because half the ppl that buy it break it or have they're "friends" steal it so they have to buy it like 3 times and about the whole violent video games make violent ppl i just have this to say cops are violent without violent ppl 1 phycopathkick killer could take over the world besides humans are inheriently violent the game just gives ppl ideas
video games didnt exist in the 60s and 70s, and what was happening in the uk? mods and rockers fighting violently, football hooligans were the MOST violent we have ever seen. if anything, the video games have stopped ppl becoming violent because they now have an outlet for their violent tendancies. TV is more to blame than video games, i dont hear you calling to ban TV do i?
