iphone_tout_a.jpg It’s not even out here yet but the Americans are already going bonkers for the iPhone.

Esteemed magazine, Time, has voted the iPhone the ‘Invention of the Year’ although it doesn’t exactly list what it was up against to gain such a frivolous accolade.

The Time hack gives five reasons why the iPhone is the best thing invented this year, starting with one headed: “The iPhone is pretty”. You can begin to see that this is hardly the most technical breakdown for lauding a piece of technology but, there you go. Under the ‘pretty’ headine, the author writes a few lines that will make many rival phone companies and users, a little irate

“Most high-tech companies don't take design seriously. They treat it as an afterthought. Window-dressing. But one of Jobs' basic insights about technology is that good design is actually as important as good technology. All the cool features in the world won't do you any good unless you can figure out how to use said features, and feel smart and attractive while doing it.”

Wow, are these reasons for the giving the award, or a love poem to the iPhone?

UK punters will get their chance to see what all the fuss is about on November 9.-Martin Lynch

pure highway.jpgRadio enthusiasts will be delighted to know that PURE has launched what it claims is the first DAB radio for your car. Even better, you won’t need a mechanic to put it in.

The PURE Highway is an adaptor that allows you to listen to DAB radio on the your car’s existing FM radio. It will also let you connect up an iPod or other MP3 player for playback through the radio too, which is a real bonus.

Powered from the cigarette lighter socket, highway attaches to your windscreen, as does the ‘discreet’ DAB aerial. Highway has four preloaded presets: Virgin Radio, talkSPORT, Planet Rock and theJazz, and you can program others – up to 20.

You can even take it out for use as a portable DAB radio at the end of the journey. Handy indeed. Available now for £70.-Martin Lynch

How much do you love your plonk? Or showing off to guests? Meet the corkscrew that lifts money from your wallet as easy as it does corks from wine bottles.

This unusual looking contraption is a Sveid corkscrew built from aviation titanium with an 18K gold fingertip lever. Comprised of 52 separate parts, including a lead cap cutter, this is a damn fine piece of engineering. At almost £35,000, it would want to be.

Well, in its defence, you do get a really, really nice engraved presentation and storage box, built from the wood of your choice with gold hinges. You won’t find this in John Lewis so place your custom order here.-Martin Lynch

Despite the multiple global bans, including the UK & Ireland, hackers have succeeded in restoring much of the violence into the controversial Manhunt 2.

Within 24 hours of the US launch of a doctored Manhunt 2 for the PSP, hackers succeeded in restoring – yes, the goriest bits were disabled, not removed – the game to its gory glory. The BBFC has already banned the game in the UK and recently rejected a watered down version of the game too.

An uncensored version of the PS2 game was recently leaked onto Web torrent sites - something game developer Rockstar, blamed on Sony.

So, despite all the furore and whether these developments are good or bad, it seems that Manhunt 2 is, and will be, available in its original form after all.-Martin Lynch
