With just a few days to go until the iPhone lunacy kicks off in the UK, Carphone Warehouse is already rubbing its hands in a Fagan-like way, predicting that up to 10,000 of the stylish handsets could be flogged in the first day.

When I say ‘day’ though, I mean a really short day as the phones will go on sale at the company’s stores on Friday evening at 6pm for four hours until the doors shut at 10pm.

According to Reuters, Darren Gardner, head of wireless UK at Carphone Warehouse, said they are hoping 10,000 will fly out the doors on Day One from its 800 nationwide stores.

"We will hope to represent a big share of what is sold."

So, is 10,000 ambitious or conservative?-Martin Lynch

You people make me sick, it's just a piece of cheap plastic crap. Either you're dumb either brainwashed to the bone.

I think you were meant to say "either your dumb OR brainwashed" not either twice... Good luck with that.

Yeah - just what are you doing on a gadgets Web site anyhow? Penance?

Come on NoNameNoGame, get some perspective here!

I'm a massive mac fan and use them day in and day out for work and at home. Have done for years. I have no intention of buying an iPhone either though! This doesn't mean that it isn't a great piece of kit that is way advanced beyond everything else out there!

credit where credit is due!

It will be a good litmus test of Apple fandom in the UK. We are used to either paying a lot for a phone and then choosing a pay as you go tariff, or paying for a contract and getting a free phone. I think how much you use the phone dictates in which camp you fall. However the iPhone is an expensive phone (rightly so, its a nice bit of kit) WITH a hefty monthly contract as well. 10,000 equates to about 42 sold per minute. I fancy Carphone Warehouse have about 50 stores around the country, so one a minute sounds a bit ambitious when you consider the amount of time it takes to process a bl00dy chip and pin card these days...

Seriously, how could they even think of releasing this without 3G or a half decent camera? If I wanted a phone from 4 years ago I'd have stayed with my 6600, this is not the US, we've seen better before and this isn't even a complete product, can the iPhone even send MMS yet?

I'm still trying to work out how this is a good buy. Ok it's touch screen, but the novelty of that wore off fast last time I had a PDA, so it's an mp3 player, EVERYONE has mp3 players on their phone now. Oh it's got free wifi? So what, I live in the centre of Manchester and i've never been able to get a good cloud connection.

I really don't get why people are excited about this.

Interesting that all the same complaints and discussions have fired up again here in the UK as in the States.
There are going to be a few people who will pay for it and there will be enough to use up the intial allocation and Carphone Warehouse along with Apple will claim it as another victory for the iPhone.

The good thing about the iPhone is that it has kick-started more focus in other phone's UI design. I wouldn't buy one myself though, too expensive and locked in, and the 'net is far too slow.

losers. all losers

fact: the iphone is not the ipod of the phone world... the ipod of the phone world was the Razr.

ipod and razr were fashion items.. the iphone is a geeks wet dream

Have you ever owned a Razr? I did and I thought it was so shit that I went back to my already 2 year old Nokia 6600, which, although larger, had MUCH better software and hardware inside. Now i'm on the Nokia 5300 and I still miss my Symbian OS.

no-one I know is going to buy one, even the total apple fanboys don't want one. Too expensive by far

Posted by Steve | November 6, 2007 08:38 PM

While I am a big apple fan, I think that the iPhone is far too expensive for the likes of a poor student such as myself. Instead i have had to content myself with the little known Fly SLT100 which has features up the wazoo and doesn't cost the earth.(not that it matters coz people will go for the big apple brand anyway)

Martin,

Surely 12.5 iPhones per store (as per your figures) in a 4 hour period only means they need to sell 3 iPhones per hour, per store. Easy if you ask me, I reckon they'll do that no problem, there's bound to be queues outside the big stores.

As for everyone who hates the iPhone, dont bother commenting - us people that want one, will have one, and we'll be waving it in your faces everywhere. I can see the iPhone being the next 3310, a very popular phone because it appeals to the masses, not the niche.

Hmm, we had 10 of these in the office this morning (hey, we supply adult content direct to the operator deck so we get the benefit of the toys from the big boys for testing) and although its real nice and slick and smooth, its a bitch to do sustained typing on. This is the country of the text elite you know. Also web retrieval and picture downloads is so slow, it shocks you into remembering what life before 3G was, like swimming in syrup. The real telling thing though that there were still 4 left on the desk this evening.

Ability to take videos?
Can send and receive MMS?
Greater than 1.7 megapixel camera?
Removable battery?
Built-in GPS?
3G internet connection?
Removable storage?
Free with monthly contract?

Apple iPhone - all answers, er, "No".

The US market is about the least sophisticated mobile phone market in any major industrialised country - the UK market is one of THE most sophisticated. We've already had phones more technologically advanced than this YEARS ago. Who's going to be dumb enough to fall for it? Urban fashion victims with more money than useful things to do on their phones. Possibly. I bet if even they read the small print about what it CAN'T do, they'd wait until a version fit for Europe arrives (if ever). Other than slick marketing, the only thing it has going for it is the touchscreen - but try fast texting on it and even that soon loses it shine - the US doesn't know anything about the scale and the vital importance of the UK text market either. I mean really, the phone for the YouTube generation doesn't do video? C'mon, gimme a break!
