The PS3 train has been gathering steam in recent weeks, first via the new firmware and now, a very welcome announcement that the console is getting DivX support which means you’ll be able to playback all of your AVI videos – you know, the ‘free’ movies and TV shows you borrowed from those torrent sites.
“We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3,” said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX. “Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.”
DivX is currently working to certify the PS3, but no date has been given for when support might actually arrive. Soon, we hope. PS3 gamers will be able to add DivX functionality to their consoles via a separate system software update.
Shouldn't the Xbox 360 have had this already? Maybe Microsoft is concerned that DivX support - and all of those free torrents - would eat into its Xbox LIVE video sales.-Martin Lynch

DivX is the only thing missing from the 360's toolbox that is stopping it from being a full-on Media Center.
You can use third party software like Transcode360 though to stream content from a DivX-happy Windows PC over to the Xbox.
