I’ve never heard of Venturer but shopping channel QVC swears by them so that means they must be OK then. Right?
Anyway, the company is already selling its SHD7001 standalone HD-DVD player in the US for around $100 and next month it will go on sale over here for a so far ‘undisclosed’ but, apparently ‘amazing’ price. Think £150-£200 then.
It’s a 720p/1080i-capable machine with HDMI that will also upscale your existing DVDs to a higher resolution. It boasts support for a range of surround sound formats including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD. There’s also an Ethernet port for hooking up to the Internet to access Web-related content that appears as Extras on some HD DVD movies. It will also be supplied with a “fantastic add on package worth around £50.00” of a HDMI cable [which should be bundled free] and two HD DVD movies, the suck-tastic Troy and Hulk.
Personally, I’d fork out £200 for a Toshiba HD-EP30 player here, which comes with 7 free HD DVD movies, including 300 and The Bourne Supremacy.-Martin Lynch

If it sells for $100 in the US then surely it should be around £50 here in the UK seeing how you get $2.08 to the £ on todays exchange rate, even taking into account local tax it should be no more that £70. Therefore if it's between £150-200 then its not such good value compared to our America friends. :o)
WTF!!!! I was just gonna say, but Nick beat me to it, that's way over-priced for uk customers considering the exchange rate. Why is it the UK always gets stiffed, come on, be fair. that sucks. I'm not even interested in HD DVD or BLU RAY paricularly. but that just SUCKS BIG TIME!!!!
This is expensive! I got a HD DVD player with built in card media card reader and a HDMI cable for £45 from Aldi a few months ago, ok so it was the in house brand Medion, it plays really well on 54" Samsung DLP tv.
Stags.. you didn't get an HD DVD player for £45 did you. Honestly some people are just sooo confused by all the lingo. You probably an upscaling DVD player for £45. Its completely different.
Sod the £200 EP30, you're only going to get SD sound of that unless you have a HDMI amp. for £60 more get the EP35, which can output HD audio to any old amp which has analogue inputs.
I think that you may be right, and the brand was Tevion, Gizmodo covered the player as a bargain of the week a while back. http://uk.gizmodo.com/2006/09/08/bargain_of_the_week_40_hdmi_dv.html
