The Wi-Fi Wrist Watch December 19, 2007

wi-fi watch.jpg I’m not sure if you need a constant Wi-Fi location tracker but if you know someone that spends a lot of time hunting for decent Wi-Fi spots, then prepare for them to owe you big-time when you get them one of these.

This is the Wi-Fi Detecting Watch where one press of a button will let you know if there is Wi-Fi in the air and what the strength of the signal is.

The strength is shown as a number from 0 to 8, letting you know exactly what kind of connectivity you can expect or if you need to move a little closer to the access point.

As to be expected it does all those other boring wristwatch things like tell the time, alarm, world time mode and calendar etc. Yours for a very reasonable £15 here.

If the Wi-Fi watch is just not ‘out there’ enough, you can always opt to move up another rung on the geek ladder with the Wi-Fi T-shirt. See it in action after the jump.-Martin Lynch

We all like to pamper ourselves now and then but I’m pretty sure that most of us will not be getting too many of the items on the Top 20 Luxury List list of some of the best and, to be fair, some of the most bizarre luxury items on the market in 2007.

Within this list you’re sure to find something to drool over and others to just shake your head at in dismay. Not all of these items are out of the reach of us mere mortals but, within their category, they represent the very top end.

And yes, some of them are just downright ugly.-Martin Lynch

Wands At The Ready: The Archos 605 WiFi Harry Potter Edition December 19, 2007

archos 605 wifi.jpg I realise that the media spotlight tends to fall on Apple products when it comes to music players and, to a lesser extent, video players but Archos is still leading the way in terms of performance and functionality.

To sweeten the deal on its excellent Archos 605 WiFi portable media player (PMP), there’s now a Special Edition Harry Potter version. No, it’s not wearing a pointy hat with stars, but comes pre-loaded with the first four Harry Potter movies. The fifth one – The Order of the Phoenix – will be available to download from the Archos content Portal once it’s released this month.

The 605 sports a 20GB hard disk drive, Wi-Fi Web surfing, a 4.3in touch-screen with an excellent 800 x 480 resolution and the ability – using an optional add-on – to use it as a DVR for recording TV.

And at just £190, we are talking a bit of a Christmas bargain.-Martin Lynch

Manhunt 2 Back In The Spotlight December 19, 2007

manhunt 2 eye.jpg The Festive spirit is notably absent in the ongoing fight over whether or the controversial and banned game Manhunt 2 will be allowed to go on sale in the UK. The BBFC has decided to fight against a recent ruling that overturned its ban.

The game became the first to be banned in a decade by the BBFC in June and, despite losing various appeals, the game’s makers Rockstar Games, was celebrating last week when the Video Appeals Committee (VAC) overturned the ban. I know many gamers were looking forward to some ‘stalk n’slash’ for Christmas but it seems the BBFC is sticking to its machetes.

There was always an option that the BBFC would push the matter further up the legal ladder, and now, it has. It is calling for a judicial review of the VAC’s decision. In a statement, it said:

"The BBFC is contesting the VAC judgement because in the Board's view, it is based on an approach to harm which is an incorrect interpretation of the Video Recordings Act. The VAC judgement, if allowed to stand, would have fundamental implications with regard to all the Board’s decisions, including those turning upon questions of unacceptable levels of violence."

In other words, the game will not be getting any classification until the review is finished.-Martin Lynch
