Microsoft may be getting a roasting over the lack of performance of its Xbox LIVE service during the holidays but it is celebrating some healthy sales figures for the Xbox 360 console.

According to the company, it has shipped 17.7m Xbox 360 consoles in just over two years. According to Vgchartz, the number of Xbox 360s shipped up to September 30th 2007 was 13.4m, meaning Microsoft has had a bumper holiday season by shifting more than 4m of them in the last three months.

In related news Microsoft announced that the game, Halo 3, has sold a stunning 8.1m copies in just over three months, while Mass Effect from BioWare, has managed to sell 1.6m copies in just 6 weeks.

For those LIVE customers who had a patchy online gaming experience over the Silly Season, Microsoft apologised and offered a free Arcade download. In a statement, Marc Whitten, General Manager, Xbox LIVE, said:

“As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance. As a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge.”

Details of the offer are due in the coming weeks.-Martin Lynch

VGChartz is a joke. No self-respecting journalist should quote them.

surur - the main figure of 17.7 comes from the company so the vgchartz figure is relatively insignificant

'Xbox 360 SALES Top 17.7m':

'According to the company, it has SHIPPED 17.7m'. Might wanna edit your title, Giz.

Big difference. Anyways, VGChartz is more accurate than any other unofficial sales-tracking company.

VGChartz reported just over 16 million units actually sold so thats still a pretty hefty number of 360's sold since september.
