As storage increases go, the latest one involving the Archos 405 portable media player (PMP) is a doozy.
The player has rocketed from a weenie 2GB to 30GB, thanks to swapping out memory storage for a mini hard disk drive. Not exactly keeping with the whole industry gold rush to Flash storage and solid state drives (SSDs) but then, using 'ancient' technology like a HDD, keeps the price below £200, which makes the 405 a bit of a bargain.
Compared to the new 32GB iPod Touch, that’s a cool saving of £130 even if you don’t get Wi-Fi and a touchscreen.
Add on the DVR Station from Archos and you can use the 405 for recording TV programmes, replaying them back in DVD quality and wirelessly streaming content from your PC.
If it's a dedicated living room solution you're looking for, then check out Archos' first offering, the Archos TV+, a combo DVR Wi-Fi streaming device. -Martin Lynch
