The Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt February 14, 2008

Why bother whipping your notebook out to check for Wi-Fi hotspots when you can just look at your chest?
Meet the Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt with a graphic that glows whenever it detects some of that wireless goodness in the vicinity. The stronger the signal, the brighter the bars glow, fluctuating dynamically with the signal strength. Yes, people will look at you oddly indeed.
Still, I am tempted but, I’m not sure if this crosses the razor thin ‘Geeky Yet Cool/Naff & Pants’ line. I think it's probably cooler than the Animated Transformers T-Shirt but not as much fun as the Animated Pong T-Shirt.

The Blu-ray camp are making the most of the troubles afflicting the rival HD DVD camp by releasing some solid sales figures for Europe.
According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, speaking in London, European movie sales have hit 2.37 million, with industry watcher, GfK, confirming the figures. That means 1.37 million Blu-ray movies have sold in the last two months alone. Last August, European Blu-ray sales were just over half a million. The BDA said:
“DVD-Video was first introduced into Western Europe in 1997, and the following year some 230,000 DVD players were installed and 2 million discs were sold through. In comparison, Blu-ray Disc made its first tentative launch in Western Europe in 2006, and the following year some 3.2 million PlayStation 3 consoles and 34,000 standalone players were installed, while 2.3 million Blu-ray discs sold through.”
GfK noted that almost 80 per cent of high-def movies sold so far in 2008 were Blu-ray titles. The biggest selling HD Christmas movie was a feather in the cap for good ole Cap’n Jack, with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End notching up nearly 100,000 sales. This was followed by The Simpsons [odd HD choice that] and Casino Royale.-Martin Lynch

Polaroid is all for embracing the digital photo future with news that it may be planning to launch a ‘prosumer’ digital camera with in-built printer.
The company, which has just announced the planned closure of its instant camera manufacturing plants, already has its toe in the digital photography market with its very cool, pocket-sized photo printer which uses ZINK (Zero Ink) technology and paper. Polaroid is expected to launch a 7MP camera [pictured] with an in-built printer later this year but has said a ‘prosumer’ model with more features is on the cards if there is demand.
Speaking to Amateur Photographer, Philippe Kalmbach, senior vice president and general manager of Polaroid Europe, said:
“If the prosumer users say we want something which is closer to a bridge [camera] with a very high zoom and different features, we are ready to do that.”
The first camera/printer will take 2x3in paper which can be loaded into the camera via a little tray and will come in packs of 5 or 10 sheets. It will have a range of capture and flash modes, a 2in display and take SD Cards. It will cost between £150-199 when it ships in the second half of 2008.

Leaving aside all the grumbling about price and lack of decent games, the PS3 has managed to hit the 1m mark in the UK.
Launched on March 23 last year, the PS3 also managed to hit the magic 1m mark before it’s hugely successful predecessor, the PS2, which took 50 weeks to sell its first million, according to ChartTrack.
Sony has confirmed the numbers and will no doubt be chuffed that the PS3 also comfortably managed to beat the Xbox 360 to the million mark. The 360 took 60 weeks. It was also reported that the PS3 sold 1 million consoles across Europe in December alone.
It seems that Sony’s next-gen console has finally overcome some early sales hiccups and other problems.-Martin Lynch
