What do you do when you can't afford a million quid to buy a real McLaren 4/14 Formula 1 car? You spend almost £4,500 building one out of matchsticks, of course.
Wacky German, Michael Arndt spent 6 years building this immaculate replica in his kitchen. And all it took was 956,000 matchsticks and 1,686 tubes of glue. Of course, there’s not much room left for socialising.
Thankfully, it can be broken down – very carefully – into 45 pieces for transport to various matchstick building conventions. Yes, it is insane but you have to admire the single-minded dedication/obsession. Jump now for some sweet close-ups.-Martin Lynch

I’m not sure how worried you are about strangers fiddling with your sat-nav but, just in case you are, Medion’s latest GPS device comes with fingerprint security.
The new GoPal P4425 navigation system sits at the top of Medion’s P-range at £250 and, alongside the novel fingerprint reader and shiny black looks, it uses something called Touchless Technology. This allows you to operate the key software functions with voice commands, which the company claims will offer greater road safety. That, or more drivers shouting at their gadgets.
The device runs on Windows CE 5.0 and uses the Centrality Atlas III 396Mhz processor, has 512MB of integrated memory, an SD Card slot, integrated Bluetooth, MP3/video playback and a 4.3in touchscreen display. It comes with full UK and European street maps.
The new Active Cradle boasts an FM transmitter and in-built Traffic Message Channel (TMC) antenna port for receiving traffic and travel reports via RDS from TrafficMaster. It’s shipping now.-Martin Lynch

The only real drawbacks to happy radio listening are (a) the DJs and (b) the endless bloody ads.
Radio DJs – unless they happen to be funny or witty but which 99% of them aren’t – are hated by many because they have an uncanny ability to talk through the start of your favourite song and end it just before the kick-ass guitar solo.
Intempo’s solution is the Rebel, a music sampling system that, once tuned into an FM station, records the 40 most played tracks and then edits out the DJ chatter and the ads. The tracks can then be downloaded onto your favourite MP3 player, essentially giving you free music. The Rebel uses PopCatcher technology which automatically records music over a 24-hour period, saving tracks as MP3 files. If the song is repeated, the clever little device keeps the best version.
Katie Richards, Marketing Manager at Intempo said: “Rebel really is an easy hassle-free way of keeping your music updated all the time, with the added bonus that it’s free. You can set Rebel to record whilst you are out at work, sleeping or partying and, when it’s finished, you have new songs to enjoy!”
Even better, you can hook it up to DAB or Internet radios and do the same thing. Excellent. Shipping from March in glossy red or black, it is priced at £70.-Martin Lynch

Yes, I realise that there’s a heart-shaped logo on this product and that today is that ridiculous, over-commercialised hoax called Valentine’s Day, but this little gadget promises to entertain for a bit longer than those overpriced flowers you bought.
This is Cubed, consisting of four boxes that clip together and sporting LED displays. The boxes have to be moved around though to recreate the answer to different symbol and word puzzles. The trick is that there’s only 40 seconds to get each of the 600 or so conundrums right.
OK, failing doesn’t mean you get electrocuted or anything but you may end up throwing one or more cubes against the wall. Each cube runs off 2 AA batteries.
Yours here for around £33.-Martin Lynch
