There are a lot of cheap and nasty iPod docks out there and some that are actually pretty damn fine pieces of audio kit, like KEF’s £250 PicoForte 1, the £300 Fatman iTube and the retro, £500 Shanling MC-30.

But now we have quality audio maker, Krell, claiming to have created the “world’s best-sounding iPod dock". At £1,350, it would want to be.

The Krell iPod Dock (KID) - certainly the most expensive dock - was launched in December in the US but it’s coming here this month and, yes, it’s OK to rant now because the Yanks are paying just £750 for it.

It has no speakers itself because it’s designed – like a dedicated CD player – to be hooked up to your existing AV system. The components used in its construction are all high-end with Class A circuitry for eliminating noise and interference. The KID, according to Krell, is the only dock capable of taking its audio direct from the iPod’s digital-to-analogue (DAC) converter. The claim is that the sound should be crystal clear.

The KID has dedicated treble and bass controls, can transfer S-Video and Composite video from the iPod to a TV and comes with a remote control.

And yours for almost twice what your US cousins are paying. Don't you feel loved?-Martin Lynch
