Retailer Dixons has reported a massive leap in the numbers of customers looking for Blu-ray players.

The news comes just a few days after the rival HD DVD format was pronounced well and truly dead. According to Dixons – ever one to milk a consumer gadget trend – the numbers of people looking for Blu-ray players is up by 150%. Are they getting them though?

Ah, probably not. Of the three models on sale on the Dixons Web site just now, just one is in stock, the Samsung BDP1400 for £247.

Managing Director at Dixons, deVere Forster, comments: “This is good news for consumers as the availability of a single format will allow consumers to purchase the High Definition Blu-Ray format DVD player with every confidence and enjoy all the benefits that this fantastic format has to offer. Now that the winning format is clear, Dixons.co.uk’s aim is to have the UK’s widest selection of Blu Ray players available for customers soon.”

Right now the ‘widest selection’ is very thin indeed. In fact, the number of Blu-ray players in general is pretty low. How soon before we get 10 on a shelf? Summer? Autumn?-Martin Lynch

Anyone buying a player before the specs of Blu Ray are finalized is a moron.

I work for the dixons group, and personally i've very rarely had a customer interested in any HD technology other than the HDTV displays themselves - many of them believe the players and movies are still just way too expensive to invest in.

With most things Dixons Group related, figures are over-exaggerated... Take what they say with a pinch of salt.

Yep, sounds to me like Dixons Group is trying to engineer a trend. I think I might wait till ASDA are selling £25 DVD/Blu-Ray/DivX/Latest_Codec players.

1 of 2 things can be concluded here:-

1.) all your friends are buying Blu-ray - you've got to buy one to keep up.

2.) There's going to be a blu-ray shortage. Panniiiiiicccc!!!!!

At the moment we've not got any High Def Stock in short of the TV's and PS3s

Mebbe this'll actually get us some decent stock in!
