Like everything else these days, smaller and thinner is the name of the game and the Arcam Solo Mini aims to please.

This update on the original Arcam Solo – which was not exactly what you’d call obese – sets out to combine style and better-than-average performance into a small piece of hi-fi design.

This a heavy metal box clad in aluminium and crammed with components from Arcam’s pricier audio equipment, including an audiophile grade slot-loading CD player and a toroid-based power supply for clean sound transfer.

The CD player will spin CDR/RW discs with MP3 and WMA files while the DACs and ‘precision’ clock come from Arcam’s CD73 unit. There’s DAB and FM radio built-in and output is rated at 25W per channel - a bit lower than the bigger Solo but you still get the same amp. You can also hook up your various MP3 players via the 3.5mm jack and there’s a USB port on the front.

It’s due out next month for a not insignificant £650, and no, you don’t get any speakers thrown in for good luck.-Martin Lynch
