zen stone plus.jpg Last month at the CES Show in Las Vegas, Creative Labs took the decidedly different step of adding tiny speakers to its tiny Zen Stone and Zen Stone Plus MP3 players.

And, from next week, you’ll be able to get the micro-boom boxes in the UK.

The Zen Stone is a 2GB player and costs £30 while the 2GB and 4GB versions of the Zen Stone Plus come in at £38 and £50, respectively. The 2GB Stone and 4GB Stone Plus come in black only but the 2GB Stone Plus is a little funkier, adding champagne, pink and blue to the mix. They all sport a bright blue OLED display, FM radio, microphone, clock and stopwatch. The battery is rated at 20 hours playback.

I realise it seems mad adding a speaker to something this small but it could be handy for using at your desk when you just don’t want to exclude everything else going on in the office – especially gossip - by wearing earphones.

I’ll be reviewing the little Stones next week and will tell you then whether the weenie speaker has any balls or not.-Martin Lynch

I happened to acquire one of these little gems just 2 weeks ago (sent from the U.S. by family). I listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts, and find the speaker very useful when doing dishes, ironing, etc. when I wouldn't want to wear headphones.

The player is pretty straightforward in its setup. Weak points would be poor navigation and no option to speed up audio. The speaker works great for spoken word, and is okay for music, but for its size, don't get disappointed and say that it doesn't sound like a boom box. It is, in my opinion, great for its size.

For my purposes, this is a nice little gem. Worth acquiring if you like podcasts. Just remember that it doesn't bookmark your podcasts if you play another track.

And I thought the chavs walking around with crap blaring from their mobiles was bad enough - now they can have their entire arsenals^Wmusic collections at their disposal to be poorly, tinnily reproduced at us!

Brian, since you got hold of one already... does it support listening simultaneously in the speaker and in earbuds?

"The Zen Stone is a 2GB player and costs £30 while the 2GB and 4GB versions of the Zen Stone Plus come in at £38 and £50, respectively"

Huh? Should I assume that the £30 one is actually 1GB?

Argos are flogging them (2GB version) for £34.99 with £5 off.

@ Andy:

The Zen Stone also exists without a screen. That is the Zen Stone. The Zen Stone Plus has a screen and therefore costs a bit more.
