I like Porsche cars. I respect the way they haven’t really changed the shape in decades but I’m not sure if that ethos extends to its new audio system. Just look at that aerial!

Thankfully, there’s no flashing dial, just a reserved display in the top left corner and where are the speakers you might ask? Well, they are in the three big knobs.

Each knob contains a 1.5in full range loudspeaker, backed up by a 3in subwoofer in the rear. The acoustics are boosted by double-wall construction and, according to the company, they will happily fill most rooms with robust sound. There’s a 3.5mm jack for MP3 players and iPod docks, and everything can be controlled using the sleek metal, credit card-sized remote.

The Porsche Audio System is certainly like the Porsche car in one respect, you will either really like it or you won’t. Thankfully, that aerial can be removed. Yours here for £409.-Martin Lynch

Apple has updated both its MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops but fashionista fans expecting some slinkier looks a la the new MacBook Air will be sorely disappointed.

Unusually, Apple’s gone for the ‘it’s what’s on the inside that really counts’ approach, with a raft of speedy new Intel Core2Duo processors ranging from 2.4GHz to 2.6GHz, bigger hard disk drives (HDDs), up to 4GB of memory and more powerful graphics chips from nVidia. On the outside they do get one noticeable tweak with the addition of the Multi-Touch panel from the Air. More details, full specs and prices after the jump.

Hot on the heels of its format win over HD DVD, Sony has revealed two new dedicated players that, for the first time, add Internet connectivity for downloading future extras and content from BD Live.

The new players are the BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 due this summer, and in the Autumn, respectively. The players finally offer much of the functionality promised – but never delivered - by the Blu-ray camp and which the now defunct HD DVD technology already offered. But at a price.

stage6.jpg DivX, the popular format for compressed video on the Internet, has suddenly shut down its Stage 6 video sharing site.

The company cites the cost of running the site which was established to show off the strengths of Divx video and to give users of DivX a forum to show off their videos. Now that most of the Web uses DivX for compressing videos – often illegal movie torrents – and the inclusion of DivX playback certification on most DVD players and some consoles, Stage6 became less relevant. DivX has been trying to sell the site since last summer.

While I realise that Blu-ray has won the HD format war against HD DVD and that people are excited about getting their first Blu-ray spinner, I’m not sure too many will be willing - or able - to drop £8,500 for one.

This is the Eidos 20 BD from Swiss high-end audio/vieo (AV) supremos, Goldmund, its first Blu-ray player. Short of being made from gold and platinum, this thing features some of the most expensive electronic guts money can buy.
