DivX, the popular format for compressed video on the Internet, has suddenly shut down its Stage 6 video sharing site.
The company cites the cost of running the site which was established to show off the strengths of Divx video and to give users of DivX a forum to show off their videos. Now that most of the Web uses DivX for compressing videos – often illegal movie torrents – and the inclusion of DivX playback certification on most DVD players and some consoles, Stage6 became less relevant. DivX has been trying to sell the site since last summer.
It was hoped the site would rival the likes of YouTube but that never materialised with Stage6 not even ranked in Nielsen’s Top 25 video sharing sites. The company claimed its decision to shut it down was because of the expense associated with keeping it going.
In a statement, Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, said:
“Our core business is to work with a wide variety of partners to give consumers a high-quality digital video experience on any device or platform. By no longer expending resources on Stage6, we sharpen our focus on creating a global standard for digital video while building a business that maximizes shareholder value. We will provide more information related the Stage6.com shutdown on our fourth quarter earnings call, scheduled for March 11, 2008.”
