While I realise that Blu-ray has won the HD format war against HD DVD and that people are excited about getting their first Blu-ray spinner, I’m not sure too many will be willing - or able - to drop £8,500 for one.

This is the Eidos 20 BD from Swiss high-end audio/vieo (AV) supremos, Goldmund, its first Blu-ray player. Short of being made from gold and platinum, this thing features some of the most expensive electronic guts money can buy.

"As a result of last week's news in regards to the format wars, Goldmund decided to launch the Eidos 20 BD earlier than we had originally planned to capture the attention of the industry that believes in the superior technological merits of the Blu-ray format," said Michel Reverchon, president of Goldmund.

The AC-Curator power supply circuit “dramatically improves picture and sound stability and dynamics” while the Mechanical Grounding construction does away with “spurious vibrations blurring the video signal and increasing jitter”. The Goldmund Magnetic Damper is a device that lowers reading errors, a feature that was previously only found on Goldmund's highest end devices.

That’s right, as AV kit from Goldmund goes, this Blu-ray player is somewhat entry-level. After all, the Goldmund Reference II turntable, at a cool £150,000, is the world’s most expensive.-Martin Lynch
