eee pc.jpg Speculation is flying about what Asus is planning with its budget Eee PC at this week’s CeBIT 2008 show, but it’s likely planning to unveil the first version of the laptop running Windows XP.

Asus has confirmed Microsoft will be joining the company at CeBIT, leading everyone to think that an XP Eee is imminent. Also of note is that T-Mobile will be attending the Asus launch which points to the Eee getting WiMAX support for mobile online access. A raft of Eee peripherals will also be revealed.

At the moment the Eee PC runs Linux but it could become a much bigger seller if it manages to pull off running XP. Of course, since XP is a much bigger resource hog than the Linux OS, it’s rumoured that the Eee could be in for another hardware upgrade in the shape of a model with an 8GB solid state disk and 1GB of DDR2 Dram. Essentially, double what it is now.

Either way, XP on the Eee could find a welcome audience with all those anti-Vista users out there. CeBIT 2008 starts tomorrow.-Martin Lynch

I'm already running that spec of EEpc 8GB + 1GB RAM.(7 inch screen)

The installed Linux OS with all the apps chews up about 4GB disk space, which is more than XP would use.

People have been running XP on the EEE for months. Asus have publicly available drivers for most of the hardware. It's nothing new, and it is certainly capable of running it. I ran XP on a PC with a 20GB hard drive, 350mhz AMD K6-2 and 256MB of RAM. Even the 4GB 512MB RAM EEE is perfectly capable of running XP. The specs of the first PCs to run XP in 2001 weren't far beyond that.

Ok, so it can run Windows already. The most important question is will shipping the EEE Pc with XP and all these upgraded specs dramatically alter the price?

The big sales point about the original EEE Pc was its size and its value for money. If these extras double the price I'd rather buy a Dell Dimension - it will be cheaper and better spec'd.
