Nokia has announced that it’s going to use Microsoft’s cross-browser/cross-platform plug-in Silverlight to add greater multimedia features and applications to its mobile phones.

Developers will be able to use the tool for creating robust interactive applications (RIAs) and content that will run across any number of devices. Silverlight will be ported to the S60 phones using the Symbian OS first, followed by Series 40 devices and Nokia Internet tablets.

Silverlight is Microsoft’s attempt to wrest the massive control [95-97% according to some analysts] that Adobe Flash has over delivering multimedia Web content. A mobile version called Flash Lite is already used by around 450 million mobile devices.

"Today's consumers are very clear in what they want: easy access to tightly integrated services and data on any device," said Lee Williams, Senior Vice President in Nokia's Devices software organisation. "Nokia's software strategy is based on cross-platform development environments, enabling the creation of rich applications across the Nokia device range.”

Microsoft will demonstrate Silverlight on an S60 during the keynote at its MIX08 conference in Las Vegas.-Martin Lynch
