eBay has sold a lot of wacky stuff in its time but it’s really outdoing itself today with the sale of a 3 million year old mammoth.

Or at least the almost complete skeleton remains of a Mastodon, a massive cousin of the woolly mammoth, unearthed towards the end of the 1990s on Rustler Ranch in North Eastern California. It was originally discovered by a ranch hand who found a tooth sticking out from a stream bank and dug it out thinking it might be an arrowhead.

This massive relative of the woolly mammoth was excavated with care by members of the Oakland Museum science department over eight days and spent until 2002 in the Oakland Museum. Now, in true American spirit, it’s up for grabs on eBay with a starting bid of just over £57,000.

It was originally discovered by a ranch hand who found a tooth sticking out from a stream bank.

The only parts missing are the tusks which are thought to have been eroded by a nearby stream. Bids are predicted to hit as high as £400,000 when the bidding closes tomorrow. Check out the excavation video below. [Thanks to Faiakes for pointing out that the mammoth is not a dinosaur]. -Martin Lynch

A mammoth cannot be a dinosaur as it is NOT a lizzard. A mammoth is a mammoth, period.
