retro karaoke.jpg You can see it now: white linen-topped tables in a smoke-filled room, soft jazz from the bored band behind you, men in suits, ladies in long dresses and the lushes asleep on the bar counter.

You step into the stage spotlight, take that ancient metal-grille microphone in your hand, suck in a deep breath and, while staring down at those expectant faces, proceed to destroy "New York, New York".

Back in the real world you can do the same with the Talent Show Kit, this retro “karaoke on a stick”.

Centred around a replica of an original 1956 Sears Wishbook microphone, it’s attached to a mounting base that contains the sound system and there’s a separate volume and tone control.

Confident crooners can even detach the mic as they walk around the living room, serenading their porcelain cat collection. It costs around £40 here.-Martin Lynch
