radiohead.jpg Not content with rewriting how to sell new albums for consumers [free, anyone?], Radiohead is giving fans the chance to remix the just-released second single, 'Nude', from the In Rainbows album.

The contest starts with fans buying five ‘stems’ from the track on iTunes, which comprise the song's guitar, bass, vocals, strings/effects and drum parts, and then they can remix it anyway they like.

They can use most of the key mixing programmes they like or, buyers will get a code for opening the file in the GarageBand mixer from April 11. After that, it’s time to get your Fat Boy Slim hat on.

The finished masterpieces can then be uploaded to the band’s remix site here where they’ll be judged – not by the band – but by the fans. The winner will be announced on May 1.-Martin Lynch

Gotta give it to Radiohead for the innovation though....

Band that's pushing the boundaries.

And I'm rap music fan ultimately...

But credit where due, they're obviously keeping the fans involved, active and made to feel important...

Radiohead are obviously in it for the love of the game.....

Not very original really...

Nine Inch Nails have recently released ALL the master files for their most recent album in a bonus DVD that came along with the Remixed album. Furthermore, they actually did this before the release of Y34R_Z3RO_R3M1XED and included the BEST fan submission on the album.

Furthermore there is a whole sub-site dedicated to fan remixes, using the software and files that NIN have previously provided.

Radiohead have gotten all the hype as they're more mainstream than NIN, but really Trent Reznor has blkown everyone out the water with his assault on the norm.

Check out what they've done with their newer album Ghosts (also multi-track released for free for remixing)- you'll be very impressed if this Readiohead drivel excites you!

Trent was there 1st. And has been for many many years, you could get the seperate tracks for songs since about 2000 for NIN songs.
He also did the free or pay money thing 1st with Saul Williams but the media didn't pick up on it...But Radiohead did, and the media were like OMG Radiohead are so original...just like they are so original with this remix thing...

More like still making money off their fans, disguised as being an innovative offer to have their fans remix their new single. I can't believe all the Radiohead hype about this, because as JamesTodd says, NIN's been doing it for a while.

And if you haven't read the terms of submitting a remix, there's not much 'making their fans feel important' about them. Radiohead and record company owns everything you submit. Literally, everything. As a submitter, you won't even be credited as a writer of the remix.

Not only did Trent Reznor do it first (as a couple of people have pointed out on here), he also released his tracks in Garageband format with all instruments/effects etc layered.

I keep hearing Radiohead being touted as these great innovators, all they seem to be doing is looking for a way around using their record label.

I like this idea, and I stumbled upon this remix that I liked quite a lot:
