I recently covered the creation of a full-sized Formula 1 car from 956,000 matchsticks and it received quite a bit of commentary from Gizmodo readers. Some thought it was cool while others felt that the maker had wasted 6 years of his life.

Now, the fabled Lord Of The Rings’ city, Minas Tirith, is undergoing a rebuild, only this time the 100 tonne stone blocks are being replaced by matchsticks. It’s not exactly going to worry the Orcish hordes but it will still take 2 painstaking years for Patrick Acton, a.k.a ‘The Matchmaker’, to complete.

ballmer.jpg Microsoft really wants Yahoo. In fact , it wants it so badly that if the Yahoo board doesn’t respond more favourably to the initial offer of $45 billion, it’s going to reduce the offer and go straight to the shareholders.

This is the bullish Steve Ballmer we all know and…. well, know, really. The Yahoo board has already rejected the Microsoft offer as too low but Steve isn’t listening. In a letter sent this Saturday to the board, Ballmer wrote:

“If we have not concluded an agreement within the next three weeks, we will be compelled to take our case directly to your shareholders, including the initiation of a proxy contest to elect an alternative slate of directors for the Yahoo! board. The substantial premium reflected in our initial proposal anticipated a friendly transaction with you. If we are forced to take an offer directly to your shareholders, that action will have an undesirable impact on the value of your company from our perspective which will be reflected in the terms of our proposal.”

Ooo, that’s fighting talk. Yahoo’s board are expected to respond today and I expect that response to be along the lines of John Cleese’s lone soldier in a besieged castle from Monty Python & The Holy Grail:

We all know the new 3G iPhone is on the way but according to popular technology pundit, Walt Mossberg, from the Wall St. Journal, it will be here within 60 days.

Speaking on a Beet.tv panel, Mossberg casually, but confidently, threw out the statement that the much anticipated 3G iPhone will be here soon enough.

“We all know that when the iPhone came out, it became crystal-clear that you were going to be able to carry in your pocket something that would give you a very good video experience. But again, broadband on these mobile phone networks is limited and I'm not talking about the fact that iPhone isn't 3G, it will be 3G in 60 days.”

hauppauge hd pvr.jpg Hauppauge announced plans to launch an ‘affordable’ high-definition PVR, the HD PVR, this quarter at CES 2008 back in January but there’s been no sign of it since. But now, it's just launched in the US and with the prospect of being able to easily record those HD programmes, it’s an enticing add-on to your HD range of toys.

The HD PVR is a USB-enabled recorder for capturing high-def TV video into H.264 in real time. It can connect directly to cable or satellite TV boxes via component inputs and there’s a bundled video player application for playing back the recordings on a PC.
