hauppauge hd pvr.jpg Hauppauge announced plans to launch an ‘affordable’ high-definition PVR, the HD PVR, this quarter at CES 2008 back in January but there’s been no sign of it since. But now, it's just launched in the US and with the prospect of being able to easily record those HD programmes, it’s an enticing add-on to your HD range of toys.

The HD PVR is a USB-enabled recorder for capturing high-def TV video into H.264 in real time. It can connect directly to cable or satellite TV boxes via component inputs and there’s a bundled video player application for playing back the recordings on a PC.

HD PVR can also create AVCHD recordings, which is the format used on Blu-ray players. A DVD burning application is being bundled to allow AVCHD recordings to be burned onto regular blank DVDs. This will allow for around 2-hours of Blu-ray HD content to be stored on a 4.7GB DVD that will play in a dedicated Blu-ray player or PS3.

The suggested retail price for this is an attractive £125 and you can find out more here.-Martin Lynch
