Nokia confirmed on Tuesday that it is working on its own iPhone-type device and now we have some shots of what it looks like, along with some early specs.

The device, codenamed ‘Tube’ for now, will be Nokia’s first touch device and will be based on the S60 Symbian operating system. It will not be part of the Nokia’s N series when it launches.

As you can see, it looks a bit like the iPhone but, while the screen will be larger than 3in, it will be smaller than the iPhone’s 3.5in.

It’s a quad band phone supporting Bluetooth, uPnP, GPRS, HSDPA, EDGE, WLAN and UMTS. It has a good camera, according to Symbian-Freak, but not one as good as is in the Nokia N Series devices and, in terms of size, it’s almost identical to the N73, but a bit wider.

Nokia certainly needs to come up with something, even if Apple iPhone sales are a relative drop in its ocean. Sadly, it seems Tube might not arrive until next year which means Apple’s forthcoming 3G iPhone will do massive business before Nokia gets its act together.-Martin Lynch

Ahhh, don't worry. I'm pretty sure Nokia will hurry it out with incomplete unreliable software that randomly crashes, leaks memory like a sieve and generally requires detailed Symbian operating system knowledge to actually use.

actually, it won't be nokia's first touch device, they already had the nokia 7710 back in 2005 i beleive.

Why even bother to spend R&D money on an iPhone "killer"? Nokia should just stick to selling less expensive handsets to the world market. Apple has only one tiny niche in the smartphone world and Nokia has just about everything else.

Without Nokia having anything to compare to OSX and iTMS, they might as well just give up competing against the iPhone.

1) "even if Apple iPhone sales are a relative drop in its ocean. "

dude, apple already has 25% smartphone marketshare in every market in which it is for sale.

take a reality pill!

2) "Sadly, it seems Tube might not arrive until next year which means Apple’s forthcoming 3G iPhone will do massive business before Nokia gets its act together."

that is clearly a fanboy sentimet - "sadly" ...

why is it a bad thing that the company which has revolutionized the mobile industry will advance even further (due in part to the studity of its competition)?!

that is a _good_ thing.

what? ... you want mediocrity to be rewarded (or at least not punished)?

take a reality pill!

A....stylus ?!

This is the thing that Nokia thinks is going to outsell the v.1 and v.2 iPhone combined ?

Uh...I just don't understand that Finnish sense of humour

It has a stylus. If you need to use a stylus with this thing, it ain't gonna work, ease of use is gone. Come on Nokia, you are better than this.

Using stylus is optional, it just makes handwriting recognition easier.
