asus eee 900.jpg The little Eee PC from Asus has created quite a stir since its launch and now we have the new and improved version, the Eee PC 900.

Shown off here first a few months back, it's launching here in the UK on May 1. The 900’s most noticeable difference is the bigger display, now at a yummy 8.9in, versus the 7in one from the original.

It also sports a better resolution of 1,024 x 600, up from 800 x 480. Sadly, the new model also uses the 900Mhz Celeron M processor and not the rumoured Intel Atom, which would have cranked things up on the performance front. Battery life is a healthy 3.5 hours.

Memory has been boosted from 512MB to 1GB and the whole package still weighs in at just under 1Kg. There are two new storage options available with the 900, a 20GB SSD in the Linux OS version and a 12GB SSD in the new Windows XP model.

Why only 12GB for the XP model, considering XP takes up a lot more space than Linux? The price of an XP licence, perchance? Anyway, both cost £329. If you have XP already, then buy the Linux model and load it up.

Both models sport a multi-touch touchpad to annoy Apple, but it only works with certain apps.

There’s an updated 7in model with 4GB of flash storage, 512MB of Dram and running XP for £249.-Martin Lynch

I spoke to a distributor today (Note, NOT A Reseller) about getting my hands on one of these. Unfortunatly it seems there are two hopes that they will be available on May 1st, and one of them is BOB. I would keep your money in the bank until at least June 15th. All those resellers taking pre-orders are p*ssing in the wind with their expected delivery dates.

Why advise people to load in XP? What is the problem with leaving Linux running on it in your opinion? Do you get little payments for doing so, or cheapies from M$?

Personally I can't wait to get one...
with Linux.

He's saying that *if you want XP on it* and you already have XP, don't buy the XP version, buy the Linux version because it has more space and costs the same, and install XP.

Mmmmmm... IWOOT! :-)

I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.co.uk
