iphone o2.jpg iPhone shoppers still sitting on the fence may be happy to hear that O2 and Carphone Warehouse have announced a £100 price cut in the cost of the 8GB iPhone, starting today.

From today until June 1, the 8GB model will cost £169 but there are no price cuts planned for the 16GB version, which still costs a wallet-crunching £329. There are also no changes in the three tariffs on offer.

The reduction comes hot on the heels of significant iPhone price cuts by T-Mobile in Germany. It’s clear that O2, like T-Mobile, is clearing stocks in preparation for the launch of 3G-enabled iPhone in June.

An even less optimistic view is that O2 is hoping to make up for its inability to generate strong UK sales for the iPhone so far. More likely a mix of the two.

If I was inclined to enter the style phone market - and I'm not - I would ignore this price-slash carrot and wait for a 3G iPhone device. After all, we are only talking a couple of months.-Martin Lynch

Can you buy this, not register it, jailbreak it instead and use your own contract instead??

Yea... I'd buy one if I didn't have to sign up for an o2 contract, but I guess that's a massive stipulation, is it?

Quite rite 2 - for a phone that doesn't include anything as simple as Forward a SMS message or copy&paste - it should be reduced to FREE with contract!

In under a year another network will bring out a better phone for less money and on a cheaper contract and then people will buy them but the 02 contracts will still be running and people will still have six mounths left. What thay need to do is drop the price make the contract more attractive and then they might get the sales there after.

drop the price and the tarrif and see how many people might be interested

However eye-catching and attractive the iPhone looks, it's way too expensive and the o2 contract tariff doesn't help either. Plus, the insistence on 18 month contract is only going to deter people like me who have got used to phones (and good ones, I mean) coming free with cheaper tariffs and shorter contract duration. o2 will need to rework its strategy if it is going to entice more people to go for the iPhone...

O2 are probably still laughing all the way to the bank. I don't think they mind that the iPhone still isn't uber-popular, with all the people who have bought one they've already made their money back and then some, taking the tariffs into account. Anyone who buys the reduced price 8GB one now is just giving them a bonus really, and there'll probably be a lot more takers with £100 off.

Firstly, there is a rumour that the 3G iPhone will be available on other networks following the supposed Australian model, and the fact that Vodafone CS has been telling people they will also have the iPhone.

If you purchase an iPhone now at the reduced price, and are already on O2, they will let you switch to an iPhone tariff for the remainder of your contract. As the revenue is split between Apple and O2, it would make sense for them to let people buying the new iPhone continue on their tariff till the end of 18 months. Theys till get revenue from the phone, unlike most other handsets (if not all in the current climate).

And yes, the current one is attractive as you can buy it instore for £169, use iPhone Pwnage to unlock and jailbreak, et voila. Tempted to get one as an emergencey phone!
