Yamaha Pocketrak 2G For Better Live Recordings April 20, 2008

yamaha pocketrak.jpg Announced back in January, Yamaha’s Pocketrak 2G is now shipping and promises to put a mini recording studio in your pocket.

Designed for recording bands out and about, the device comes with 2GB of storage and has long-life battery that’s good for up to 19 hours of recording. The 2GB of storage is good for up to 3 hours of CD-quality linear PCM recording or much more if you opt for some of the MP3 recording modes.

The twin mics can also be used to capture college lectures you couldn’t be arsed attending in person. It’s suitably slim and light, being only 0.5in thick and weighing just 49g.

Pocketrak 2G comes bundled with the Steinberg AI4 music production software for Mac and PC computers, for editing those ‘Next Big Thing’ recordings when you get back home. There’s even a handy slide-out USB connector to plug it straight into to your PC. It costs £249 and you can find it here.-Martin Lynch

Nice of Yamaha to invest so much into enabling piracy at concerts. Expect to see CD quality rips of all your favourite bands on Pirate Bay real soon! Can't wait for the video-version ;)

To be fair Justin, you can record 'CD Quality' sound with a load of players from iRiver, Archos and about a thousand other manufacturers. Have a look at the audio recorders in your local Curry's or wherever. This is far from a first.

what dave said AND also, CD Quality only means that the audio signal is going to be nice and clean from an electronic perspective. That has little to do with creating a well mixed lived recording... which would require either A. To position something like this device 10 or 20 feet above the audience in a "sweet spot" in the room (if there is one), attached to some sort of mount which gives it total isolation from being jarred, oh and a sound guy not sucking mixing the band hopfully through a sound system that does not suck ass. Also, you will be very poor bass response even if all the aformentioned variables are in line... or B. Have a professional multi-track the concert and mix it later. =)
