GTA IV Racks Up ‘80 Orders Per Minute’ at Play.com April 29, 2008

Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV), released today, is expected to do massive business and with Play.com reporting sales of 80 copies per minute, it looks like the predictions are coming true.

With almost perfect reviews, the early sales figures tally with today’s news that GTA publisher, Take Two, expects sales to exceed analyst predictions. This means GTA IV could smash & grab over £200 million in its first week.

Play.com’s Stuart Rowe, chief operating officer, told Gameindustry.biz:


“We're experiencing trading levels similar to what we would see in the run up to Christmas, taking over 80 orders per minute at peak times. We have had to recruit extra warehouse staff to work through the night to ensure product arrives on the day of launch. Grand Theft Auto IV is going to break all previous records when it comes to gaming.”

According to Take Two’s chief executive Ben Feder, speaking to Reuters:

“Our expectations are very high, higher than analysts give the game credit for. All the analysts had a (sales) number, give or take, and I think we will be on the upside of that rather than the downside.”

I got my copy and I have to agree with a lot of the discontent on the forums. It's not so perfect after all. I don't know how the reviews have been claiming that there's almost no jaggies, pop-up, texture delays or slowdowns because they're all in there and all pretty common. Sure, it's a good game but no-way 10/10.

Andy Jones sounds like an upset bunny who keeps getting shot at by mean policemen.


The game, Is amazing. High speed chases, late-night shoot-offs, high-flying helicopters, It's all there and more. The game offers so much to you and it's just unbelievable, The single player is certainly amazing but what it really comes down to in my books is the multiplayer, I love multiplayer games, If you love story, The story is so great, awesome dialogue, awesome missions, just great but the multiplayer is out of this world!


16 people online, In one city! Choose a mode, Freemode, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, To name a few but my favourite is Cops 'n' Crooks. I won't go in to much more detail as you can just google GTA IV and see tons of reviews, But if you have a PS3 or Xbox, GET THIS GAME.

Both Andy and Stolen Cheese are two views from opposite sides...


One is someone who would do his utmost to find fault in something that's called "perfect" or is hyped.


The other is a fanboy.


I on the other hand gents am a cynic. I don't believe it until I see it.

I feel I can step in here and give a non-biased take on the game. I've been playing the game on and off for the past 48 hours on my Xbox 360, and I'm around 50% through.

GTA IV is definitely a logical step forward from GTA SA. It's still just GTA, and it's very familiar to it's predecessors.

The massive problem it faces, however, are todays new age, modern games.

If you wanna kill people, you're gonna turn to Call of Duty 4 or Ranbow 6: Vegas 2. If you wanna race really fast cars (cars with decent handling, I might add), you'll want to stick with Burnout Paradise. The only thing the game offers that none of these do are killing innocent bystanders and stealing any car you come across... and those two points alone make it a worthwhile game to play.

GTA IV is a case of 'Jack of all trades, Master of none'. It has it's dirty fingers in every flavour of pie imaginable. It utilises a similar combat style to Gears of War, in respect to taking cover, yet has an auto-aim feature that leaves a lot to be desired, as it still suffers from the same traits the old system had; not being 100% sure where your character is going to point his gun. Scrolling through targets is completely hit-and-miss also.

The driving has had a strict makeover in comparison to the previous-gen releases. It feels a lot more like the driving style in Forza 2, where there's a certain feeling of understeer in most cases. Turning under braking is near impossible, meaning that the aforementioned 'high-speed chases' take a leisurely pace through corners.

Evading the police is now easier than ever. After committing a crime, your rader shows you the circumference of the area that the Police are searching for you, and also the location of both in-car and on-foot units. The higher the serverity of your law breach, the more stars you acquire, and the bigger the area in which the Police search for you becomes. To escape the law, you need to escape this zone without being detected by the fuzz. Everytime you're spotted, the zone reforms around you, with you back in the centre. Also worthy of note is that Pay-And-Spray shops can only be effectively used when you are not seen to be entering one.

Furthermore, the online play is abysmal, big let down in my eyes. Once you kill someone, it's almost impossible to repeat the deed after they respawn, short of using explosives. You pump a mag of M4 rounds into them, and while you stop to reload they kill you with 4 pistol rounds.

All in all, though, the missions are good, and it is most definitely the best GTA yet. While the story itself is almost certainly going to be the largest the next gen consoles have ever seen, I don't think it's gonna have as much replayability as Call of Duty 4's online play when all is said and done. Same can be said for RSV2 and Burnout Paradise.

In short, it's gonna be a frustrating, yet enjoyable game... while it lasts.
