xbox 360 blu-ray small.jpg Ever since HD DVD lost the HD format war, the rumour mill has been working overtime on just when Microsoft will stick a drive inside the next Xbox 360.

The official word is ‘No’ but now more Asian sources are cropping up, claiming that a spin-off from Asus called Pegatron Technology has been commissioned to build a 360 with a Blu-ray drive inside. Of course, this is not the first such claim, since Lite-On were also rumoured to be the Chosen One for turning the Xbox 360 Blu.

Microsoft also shot down comments from Sony’s US boss claiming Microsoft was talking to it about Blu-ray.

While Microsoft is maintaining its corporate line of ‘digital distribution’ via Xbox LIVE as the future for delivering HD content, you can't help feel that sticking a Blu-ray drive in the 360 couldn’t be all that difficult. Still, they’d have to do something about that damn fan noise which would pretty much ruin any HD movie experience.

While a Blu-ray Xbox would force Sony and Microsoft into a HD console price war – good for us all – would you buy one?-Martin Lynch

Hell yes.

I've got a 360, I bought one after the HD war ended, but despite still preferring the 360, the PS3 has become a considerably more attractive option than it did now we know that Blu-Ray is the one and only HD format.

A 360 with Blu-ray would be genius. It's all very well saying digital distribution is the way forward, but there's no way it can be as versatile as having the full choice of Blu-ray films that are out.

Great idea.
In marketing terms it addresses the one major difference between the 360 and the PS3. Handy, especially given the 360 is a slightly superior media centre. As a games machine, the 360 is clearly better on choice and quality but a BR drive is unlikely to affect games releases (still DVD-9).
The bonus for us all is that if it were true, I'd expect MS to further reduce system noise on the new variant to aid its expanded role, as well as enhance the console slightly as well, maybe including WiFi (a major bugbear of mine).

Can't say I see a downside to it happening.

Yes, Yes, 1 million times No...

I have the elite, I may consider buying a BD external drive, but TBH whats the point

-

unless they release BD games, which I doubt theyd bother converting their current catalogue to BD

-

maybe the Xbox3000 ( or whatever buzz word they come up with next ) will have BD capabilities built in... we'll see

-

in the mean time, Give me your PS3 Im skint and Im greedy.

Can u imagine if GTA IV came in a blu-ray disk? Or if there was a provision to install it on a hard drive if it detected that a hard-drive was present....Or both!
Sure I can see a real market for downloaded content...However, it so easy to carry a disk with me to my friends house....
I'd rather borrow my neighbours disk than entire console to go watch HiDef Movies...(Ok I'm lying there but u get me!)
With the release Of GTA on both formats we can clearly see the advantage of the added capacity!

It is not rocket science Microsoft, give us blu-ray without the ring of death!

Why do I keep reading people saying that the fan will 'interrupt movies', and make them unwatchable? How quiet do you have the volume set when you're watching movies? Loud enough to drown the fan out, that's for sure.

Like Steve, I bought an Xbox 360 after the HD DVD format got laid to rest. I bought my 360 because all of my friends have 360's, simple as. I plan on buying a PS3 for Blu-Ray movies, because it has a gazillion added features over a regular BD player, and it's a console, aswell as being priced similarly - no brainer, in my eyes.

If MS brought out a 360 with a BD player, I'd chip in my Xbox premium and get an Elite with a BD drive, no question, because it's cheaper than my current plan.

If BD does start appearing, I'd imagine the consoles would start being priced the same as they were before the price drop.

I think that digital distribution is the way forward.

It's true that games on BD make sense (more space for more stuff!) but why couldn't Microsoft just bring out games on USB sticks? They're getting cheaper by the day are are far more robust and reliable in the long-term...

Less flimsy discs, more solid state/downloadable content I say!

I would buy an add on Blu ray drive for the xbox. I already have the HD DVD one. Depends on the price though. If it was >£100. If they bring out a machine with it in, I would px my current elite.

The fan noise is annoying when watching films, it is ok when something is happening but its too loud during quiet scenes.

Digital distribution just doesn't work here in the UK, we don't yet have the infrastructure to download them fast enough.
