david reeves sony ceo.jpg Yesterday was PlayStation Day, apparently, and Sony announced the kind of news that it’s been praying for, for more than a year: the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 in Europe.

The company announced that the PS3 has now topped 5 million in sales, overtaking the Xbox 360 which launched a lot earlier and has been consistently cheaper. Maybe there’s something to this Blu-ray lark after all?

A ‘delighted’ David Reeves [pictured], SCEE president and CEO announced:

"I am delighted to be able announce today that we have sold more PlayStation 3's throughout Europe than Xbox 360 - even though they launched sixteen months before PS3.”

“I'm also delighted to announce today that we have sold over 5 million PlayStation 3's throughout Europe. We are particularly proud of this as it has been achieved in a similar time frame as PlayStation 2 which retailed, if you remember, at a significantly lower price.”

Reeves pointed out that the PS3 has been outselling the Xbox 360 every month since last October. I guess all we need now are better games since the first raft have been a mixed bag, to say the least.

I bought my PS3 as soon as the HD format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD ended in January because I wanted the HD movie playback bonus alongside the games.

Since most of us clearly didn’t buy it for the early games or backwards compatibility with our PS2 games library, why did you buy your PS3?-Martin Lynch

Well i got it for free from the aol offer... however only use it and picked it over a laptop as i wanted a HD video format player aka blu ray, and also nice to use it as a media center.

I bought it in the early days for (the shame of it!) Ratchett and Clank and covered that up with the excuse that it could stream content to the tv from the upstairs PC...

I bought it because it was the logical successor to my PS2. I also thought there might be more to come with updates and so on, and that has been proved correct.

I bought it simply for pro evo 2008 and gta IV, and the fact that i feel so comfortable with the controller and the interface.
I do very little online gaming, and have only recently come to appreciate the fact that it is an excelent blue ray player, although as a poor student :) i have no need or way to watch hd content (no hdtv) for a few years

HD of course, but its primary function is now the replacement of one of the computers that I have folding@home full time. I still hope it can deliver the same extraordinary experiences that were Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, God of War, etc.

i own a PS3 60gig, Xbox360 Elite, Wii, DS Lite and a PSP ... and i play my 360 the most by far! i only bought the ps3 for exclusive titles (Haze), and for the occasional Blu Ray title.

its a gr8 console, but simply cant touch the 360 with regards to pure enjoyment, social interaction and value for money.

i also own a ps3 and 360 and agree, from a games point of view the ps3 largely goes unused, the 360 is just more fun! Still the ps3 is a cheap way into blu ray.
