The gaming industry is currently being dominated by talk of a rather understated new release called Grand Theft Auto IV. Heard of it? This is the title that was rated ‘perfect’ by a range of reviews, racked up 80 orders per minute on play.com and broke the UK sales record in just 24 hours.

Well, Rockstar can add an even more impressive statistic to its list of accolades. GTA IV has now been officially announced as the biggest media launch of all time, and in this we’re including music, video and literature.

Non-gaming titles like the final Harry Potter book and Pirates of the Caribbean have been overtaken by a global retail sales total of over $500 million in its first week.

The final movie in Johnny Depp’s fruity pirate trilogy for example, generated just $404 million at the box office.

Publisher Take-Two’s Chief Executive Ben Feder reckons the media buzz surrounding the game, generated to quite a large extent by watchdog groups looking to ban it, has proven more valuable than a marketing campaign, and feels the sales boom isn’t over yet "I wouldn't expect demand to drop off quickly, I expect word of mouth to drive sales well into the future.". – Paul Lester

Wow, what a stat there....

Good games, make good money... It's the title the PS3 was waiting for...

All the people I know are going nutts over it or tryna get it... LOL....

Shame that a few kids that are so poorly brought up that the game skews their sense of reality and because of those few the rest of the sane gamers are at risk of losing games such as these...

But when it comes to money and what the govts will tax from the half a billion made by this game... It won't happen soon... The game makers might be laughing... But when they laugh, the government laugh along to....
