In a move that’s all but essential to the future of downloadable video, including services such as Apple’s iTunes, we’re finally starting to see a push towards faster broadband.
Rather surprisingly it’s Bournemouth that’ll benefit from the UK’s first super-fast fibre network following a decision by fibre firm H20 that’ll bring 100Mbps broadband to 80,000 homes and business.
Astronomical costs associated with cable upgrades will be cut to manageable levels by running the infrastructure through the sewers, with UK regulator Ofcom busy working out how these underground channels can be used to make it more widely available.
The UK has fallen rather spectacularly behind countries such as France, who already offer 50Mbps or higher services, so if anything integration is long overdue.
H20 Networks’ managing director Elfed Thomas outlines exactly why the scheme is actually quite a big deal “This will be the world’s largest single fibre deployment, it’s not just a one-off. We are working with our partners here and overseas to create more Fibre Cities.”
Work on the project is due to start in September, though we may have to wait 18 months for the service to be up and running and stable enough to use effectively. – Paul Lester

France has 50MB, Japan has 100MB. So we are already at least 1 year behind the rest... That's great. In 18 months time we will still be 2 1/2 years behind everyone else.
If a contractor told me it would be 18 months, I would tell them to hire more staff, pull their finger out, and get it in gear.
Uk is always behind. My friend in Oslo is having 100MB fibre fitted in his apartment building at the moment.
Even so he can still get 25mb connection on a standard line where I am lucky if I reach 5 in the UK.
Piss poor
Not only are we ages behind other countries, but we are also patronized by stupid adverts giving us "superfast" broadband (cough -tiscali-cough). 100mb/s is superfast, but 8mb/s that you only reach at 1AM when no-one else is using it is NOT. Sort it out, someone, please - NOW
Consider yourselves lucky. The standard broadband in Canada ranges from 3-4Mbps with the "premium" only reaching 8mbps. Unfortunately for Canadians there seems to be somewhat of monopoly within the broadband service with most users subscribing to Telus. Ive experienced both worlds, maybe people should be grateful for what you have now rather than be so quick to condemn the UK broadband situation. I'm not making excuses for the current situation in the UK but it's just the situation we have to deal with.

Is that meant to be ironic?
AN intelligent man you baffoon!
Double irony. It's spelt 'buffoon', you cretin.
