dom joly.jpg We all laugh at Dom Joly roaring into his giant mobile phone but as most people will tell you, ignorant mobile phones are right up there with cockroaches and rats on the ‘Things I Hate Most’ list.

A new survey of 2,000 UK adults has revealed just how hated rude mobile phone users are. More than half of respondents said that ignorant phone users should be punished, while 1-in-10 went further by claiming they should be slapped with ASBOs.

My own solution of hanging them naked from lamp-posts by their toes and offering passers-by the chance to spank them with table tennis bats for charity and sticking the video on YouTube was not, sadly, among the key solutions offered.

Most people felt they should have a 12-month ban on using their phones in public which, to be frank, is unenforceable. Unsurprisingly, men wanted harsher punishments than women. Most respondents were also against mobile phone use being allowed on planes, which is coming sooner than you think.

The Top 5 irritating mobile phone abuses are:

1. Talking loudly on the phone
2. Texting while talking to you
3. Playing loud music on their phones
4. Using their phone in restaurants
5. Swearing on the phone in public

Rob Barnes, head of broadband and mobiles at moneysupermarket.com, commented:

"Some people blissfully ignore basic mobile etiquette when it comes to using phones in public places, shouting and swearing regardless of where they are. We’ve become addicted to being constantly connected and I think one of the worst things someone can do is incessantly check their phone whilst talking to you. Although I do think handing out mobile ASBOs may be a bit severe."

Right, back to my plan for lamp posts, charity spanking and YouTube video disgrace – all suggestions on how we can make this a law appreciated.-Martin Lynch

And Blackberrys (-erries?). Pluck 'em.

How did such a stupid idea - making an asynchronous communication platform into a pseudo real-time one - ever take on? And how appallingly rude is it when a user pulls it out while talking to you?

On the other hand, it is at least quieter than the mobile phone user, I suppose.

Rude mobile phone users should have their phone confiscated! I would love to be the one who enforces that!

You have to fight them at their own game. When someone nearby on the train starts a long and loud conversation on their mobile I make a fake call on my own and start recounting, in a very loud voice, the details of their conversation will added observations and insults. However, it does not always work. I was once asked by the aforsaid mobile user to be quiet as he could not hear his friend on the other end on the line. Even relaying this fact with a few choice insults to my non-existant friend failed to change his ways. Some people are beyond help.

I don't get the logic on being ill-mannered when using your mobile at a restaurant or public area.
Is'nt it fine for a person to talk softly into his mobile?
So is talking to friend in public or in a restaurant considered appallingly rude?
What's the difference with talking softly on a mobile or a human directly?

I want to get a gsm signal blocker, but if possible a directional one, if someone pisses me off with their loud conversation on 'glassin dis guy who told ta put di fone down guy innit' i want to cut their conversation short before punch them in the adams apple!

Yup, a jammer sorts out 1.4&5 quite nicely. I always carry mine now with everywhere, great for the morning commute. Its not directional though, but has hi & lo power settings.
