Nintendo has just launched one of its more innovative Wii services in the US and has confirmed that WiiWare will be coming to the UK next week.

wiiware ff.jpg WiiWare is an online service - like Xbox LIVE Arcade - that will allow Wii owners to buy and download Wii games or applications that have been developed by third-party developers, both large and small. The service will launch with a raft of titles from major developers and smaller, indie outfits.

"WiiWare is to the video game industry what independent films are to Hollywood," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "WiiWare lets developers experiment with new ideas and experiences. Combined with our collection of classic Virtual Console games, Wii provides one-stop shopping for the greatest games of the past - and the future."

The initial line-up looks like this:

Dr. Mario & Germ Buster

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King

Lost Winds

Pirates: The Key of Dreams

Pop

Star Soldier R

Toki Tori

TV Show King

Most downloads will cost under or around £4, using purchased Wii points and new titles will launch every Monday.

The interesting twist is that gamers will able to leave a review score for any game they have bought and played, allowing other purchasers to see if they are about to buy a mini-classic, or a pile of poo.-Martin Lynch
