Games studio Rockstar must be feeling what it’s like to pull off a big bank job and get away with it as gangster game, Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV) continues to smash records and rake in the cash.

The highly recommended game, which went on sale just two weeks ago, has just sold over 1 million copies in the UK and, on an even bigger scale, GTA IV has blown away the Guinness Book Of Records 1-day sales record by flogging 3.6 million units and earning $310 million (£155m). It also nabbed the Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours record, making the game the most profitable entertainment release of all-time – that includes other video games, movies and book releases.

To put it in context, the other 24-hour records in each category were:

Fastest-selling video game in 24 hours: Halo 3 at $170 million
Fastest-selling theatrical movie in 24 hours: Spider-Man 3 at $60 Million
Fastest-selling book in 24 hours: Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows at $220 million

In the UK, despite sales dropping by a whopping 77% in the second week – as to be expected – it’s still outselling Wii Fit by 4-to-1, highlighting the fact that most traditional gamers are still more interested in exercising their thumbs than their bums.

The Xbox 360 version continues to rule the roost over the PS3 with 62% of all sales, up from 55% the week before.-Martin Lynch
