Samsung ‘Blue Phase’ TV Doubles Refresh Rates May 15, 2008

Samsung is hoping to revolutionise how LCD TVs handles fast-moving video with a new technology called ‘Blue Phase’, that doubles the best image refresh rates out there now to 240Hz.

The problem with certain LCD TVs is that action sequences or sports can look can look terrible, with blurring and ghosting thanks to slow – or badly implemented - image refresh rate technology. Early 50Hz LCD TVs were truly awful and even many of today’s 100Hz TVs suffer when it comes to handling fast-moving video. The top sets out there now offer 120Hz refreshing but Samsung has just showed off a new TV with a staggering refresh rate of 240Hz.

Samsung will unveil the first 15in Blue Phase LCD panel at SID (Society for Information Display) 2008 International Symposium in Los Angeles, May 18 to 23.

Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President Souk Jun-hyung, who leads the Display R&D Center of LCD Business, said:

"Our Blue Phase mode is a major evolutionary development beyond conventional liquid crystal modes. Samsung's development of this technology provides a tremendous opportunity to move image quality of LCD screens much closer to that of a real moving image."

While I can picture all you rabid footie and sports fans hopping for joy, you’ll just have reign in your excitement for now as the first, full-size Blue-Phase LCD TVs will not be mass-produced until 2011. Damn.-Martin Lynch
